With the growing concerns of obesity and overweight – more than 1.9 billion adults classified as overweight all over the world, losing weight is proving to be quite an uphill battle for most of us.

Given this dilemma, you can’t help but wonder what are the obstacles that stop people from losing weight and why.

Let’s look into the challenges that people aiming to lose weight normally encounter and figure out if they are doing it the right way by learning how to calculate the percentage of weight loss in the process.

Obstacles to losing weight

According to an exercise scientist, there are three main obstacles that face most people who are trying to lose weight.

We spend too much time sitting down

Given how sedentary lifestyle of most people, it’s not surprising why this is one of the obstacles that hinder people from losing weight.

While working out can help, sometimes it’s not enough.  When stuck at a desk job the whole day, we have to try getting up for a few minutes every hour.  Something as simple as this can actually make a difference.

Forgetting how much we have eaten and how much we have exercised

Even when we try to keep track of how much we have eaten and how much we have exercised, we often forget how much exactly.

We think we have just consumed the right amount of calories but in reality, we have totally gone over the recommended number of calorie that we should consume.

And as for exercise, we think we have done and burned a lot of calories but the truth is, we might not be doing enough to burn off the excess calories we have consumed.

Portion sizes are not proportioned

Supersize me, anyone?  Whenever you order food from a restaurant, have you ever noticed that the portion sizes are getting bigger and bigger?

If you’re thinking of losing weight, giant portion sizes are not your friend and you should stay away.  If it’s too much for you, consider cutting the serving into small portions.

Apart from these obstacles, there are still so many reasons why it’s so hard for people to lose weight.

Simple ways to lose weight

While losing weight can be challenging, there are still simple ways to lose weight out there. However, this requires your full commitment.  You won’t magically lose weight if you don’t exert any of your efforts.

Cut back on your carbs

Yes, we hate to break it to you but you might have to say goodbye to some of your favorites.  While the occasional cheat day is okay, it’s time to cut back on the consumption of your starches and sugars (also known as carbs).

Eat more protein and veggies

Switch to a healthier diet by eating more meat and vegetables.  These contain all vitamins, minerals, and fibers that our body needs to be healthy.

A protein-rich diet would be very beneficial to your body.  Apart from its contributions to the development of the body’s organs and functions, proteins are important because they are essential in boosting metabolic rate and reducing appetite.

Exercise at least thrice a week

Get yourself into an exercise program at least thrice a week. If extensive workouts are too intense for you, try simple workouts that can help you lose weight.

Combine cardio exercises like swimming, jogging, running, etc with weight exercises like lifting.

Losing weight and calculating the percentage of weight loss

While losing weight can take a while, these simple ways will surely be helpful to you.  With your dedication, discipline, and will, it wouldn’t be too hard for you to lose weight.

In the process of losing weight, a great way to monitor your progress and how far you have come since is calculating the percentage of weight loss.

The number you see on the weighing scale is not an actual representation of the weight loss you have lost. The best way to accurately track your progress is by figuring out the percentage of the weight you have lost.

If this sounds complicated, believe us when we say it’s not!  All you need to do is get a weighing scale and a calculator.

Before you get started though, make sure you keep track of the weight you were when you started your weight loss program.

You can then subtract the current weight that you have from the weight that you were in the beginning.  The answer to this is your “total weight loss”.

Once you have your “total weight loss” number, multiply that by 100%.  The result then becomes your weight loss percentage.

Maintain your weight and stay healthy

Once you’ve hit your weight loss target and you now have an idea of the percentage of weight you have lost, make sure that you are still able to maintain it and stay as healthy as possible.

Remember that you did not go through all those hardships just to gain all the weight back.
