In today’s changing times, there are now more people that care about their fitness than in the last decade. And because times are now more modern, there are now fitness and running watches that allow us to track our workouts accurately. One of the better ones I have found in the market is the Suunto Ambit3 Run.
One of the watches that does not get a lot of attention on Amazon, I was a bit curious as to what the Suunto Ambit3 Run could offer me during my runs and workouts. It actually is nice to have because of the fundamentally sound features it comes with. If you want to know more, read my review.
A brief overview of the product
Suunto Ambit3 Run is a running watch that was made to be one of the more affordable ones by Suunto. It was originally meant for trail runs but it can actually still be a pretty good running watch to use whenever you are all about that urban lifestyle and would much rather prefer running in the city.
Who is this product for?
Suunto Ambit3 Run is actually better used for those who prefer running through trails up in the mountains or woods. That is because it is great at navigating routes for you through its GPS so that you can find the best trail to use whenever you are outside the city doing one of your trails runs. However, those in the city can still use this watch not only for their runs but also for other everyday purposes such as heart rate monitoring. It also looks quite elegant and can help complete your sporty look.
Key features and benefits
- Route navigation
One of the Suunto Ambit 3 Run’s best features is its route navigation. Its GPS is smart enough that you can take advantage of it to automatically draw up a route for you. Or, if you want, you can use the Suunto app to download a route. You can opt to use that downloaded route instead if you do not want the watch to draw up a route for you. Whatever your choice is, you can truly see the beauty of this feature whenever you are running an unknown trail. It can be a bit of an overkill if you are using it in a city or town you already are familiar with.
- Voice guidance
If you are familiar with interval workouts, you would know that timing is necessary. However, it can be difficult to keep track of time especially if you are too busy with your pacing. The great thing about Suunto Ambit3 Run is that it has voice guidance for your interval workouts. It tells you when to change your pace as you no longer need to monitor the time yourself.
- Know your minimum recovery time
One of the features of the activity tracker in this fitness watch is that it gives you your minimum sleep or recovery time depending on how severe your workout is. Because the Suunto Ambit3 Run knows how important recovery is, it makes sure that you know how long you should rest depending on the workout you just had. It also prevents you from over-exerting yourself in the middle of what is a hectic and busy week for you.
- Accurate heart rate
The Suunto Ambit3 Run uses a separate chest strap that tracks your heart rate more accurately than other fitness watches that monitor it through your wrist. Chest straps are the most accurate way of monitoring heart rates outside of the lab. As such, you can trust that this running watch will give you the best and most accurate heart rate readings.
- Check your progress on the go
By using the Suunto Movescount App, you will be able to monitor your fitness goals and your progress on the go through your mobile device or tablet. You can check your stats to see where you should improve on. You can also create workouts during your free time so that you no longer have to waste precious time creating them at the exact moment of your workout.
What we like
- The route-mapping feature is very intuitive as it allows you to run through new and downloaded paths whenever you are trail running.
- It measures your heart rate in the most accurate of ways.
- The build looks good and solid and does not feel cheap.
What we don’t like
- It does not have the most number of features for the price you are getting it for.
- A bit too expensive for me.
- The app is not fully integrated with your mobile phone and needs to be connected to a computer for it to be utilized to its full capacity.
FAQ and additional tips
- Do I need an additional strap for the heart-rate monitor?
Yes. While other watches use the watch itself to monitor your heart rate on your wrist, this uses a chest strap that is more accurate in monitoring your heart rate.
- Can I use the route-mapping feature for city runs?
Yes, you still can. Though it is recommended that you use it when trail running because of how unpredictable the trail can be, you can still use it for city running even though you already are familiar with the streets.
- How long will the watch run?
Since Suunto Ambit3 Run uses a monochrome dot-matrix screen, it will not eat up a lot of battery life. Using it to its fullest can drain the battery in 15 hours but you can extend its lifespan if you are not using the GPS.
- How heavy is the watch itself?
Although the Suunto Ambit3 Run prides itself at being one of the better running watches in terms of overall build quality, this sturdy product is not pretty heavy. It only weighs about 4 ounces and is quite light if you actually think about how high-quality its build is. It will not feel cheap on your wrist and will not weigh you down either.
- How long does it take for the GPS to find your location?
Suunto Ambit3 Run’s GPS will take about 30 seconds to accurately pinpoint your location. It isn’t the fastest but it makes sure that it gets your location right every time.
The Suunto Ambit3 Run might be a bit too expensive for the limited features it comes with but this high-quality product promises to give you a good running experience by giving you all the basics of a good fitness watch. On top of that, it does not feel cheap and fragile because it actually has one of the best build qualities on the market.
